My Journey to Find My Birth Family: The Inspiration Behind ‘Girls from Brooklyn’

The Seeds of Curiosity: An Adoptee’s Story

Growing up adopted was simply part of my story – a fact as natural as the color of my eyes. My parents provided me with enough information to satisfy my young mind, and I felt complete with my family dynamics. Yet life has a way of planting seeds that bloom in their own time. As I watched my own daughter grow, those dormant questions about my origins began to stir. The mystery of my birth family lingered like a story waiting to be told, though the obstacles of closed adoption laws and expensive private investigators kept that story just out of reach.

A Mediterranean Twist of Fate

Sometimes the universe whispers to us in unexpected ways. During my 50th birthday celebration in Greece, friends made a casual observation that would change everything – they said I looked Greek. This simple comment challenged my long-held beliefs about being Italian and Polish, sparking a curiosity that led me to my first DNA test through Ancestry.com. Though this initial attempt yielded only distant connections, it was the first thread in what would become a tapestry of discovery.

The Magical Moment Everything Changed

On a December evening in 2022, sitting at my dining room table with friends, the conversation turned to 23andMe. As they shared a story about someone finding their birth father, something extraordinary happened – an overwhelming instinct compelled me to order a DNA kit right then and there. Little did I know this impulse would lead to a remarkable revelation.

A Journey of Synchronicity

What happened next seems almost too perfect for fiction. Within hours of receiving my results in January 2023, I connected with a 30-year-old woman who turned out to be my first cousin once removed. The pieces fell into place with breathtaking speed – she was the great-niece of my birth mother, and suddenly, my origin story began unfolding like magic. Even more incredibly, I discovered I had a cousin living just an hour and a half away.

The Power of Connection

Meeting my birth mother was like looking into a mirror of personality rather than appearance. Though we didn’t share strong physical resemblances, we connected through something deeper – a shared clairvoyant sensitivity and spiritual nature that transcended genetics. This discovery opened my eyes to the mysterious ways our identities are shaped, not just by DNA, but by invisible threads of connection that span generations.

From Reality to Fiction: The Birth of ‘Girls from Brooklyn’

This extraordinary journey of self-discovery became the inspiration for my novel, “Girls from Brooklyn.” The book weaves together the real-life magic of my search with elements of fantasy, creating a story that explores the deepest questions of identity and belonging. Through its pages, readers will discover how an ordinary DNA test can unlock extraordinary destinies, how family connections can transcend time and space, and how the search for identity can lead to magical revelations.

In “Girls from Brooklyn,” I’ve created a world where the line between reality and magic blurs, much like my own experience of finding my birth family. The characters are inspired by the remarkable individuals I encountered along my journey, each one contributing to the enchanting tale of discovery, destiny, and the inexplicable ways our lives intertwine.
